Myocardial Infarction and Cardiac Arrest Flashcards
What is a myocardial infarction?
Supply of heart is suddenly blocked, usually by a blood clot
What are the symptoms of a heart attack?
Chest pain (indigestion to severe)
Referred pain to left arm, jaw, back and tummy
Feeling lightheaded/dizzy
Shortness of breath
Nausea/Vomiting
Sweating
Feeling of impending doom
Coughing or wheezing
What is the leading cause of heart attacks?
Coronary heart disease
What is coronary heart disease?
Condition where the coronary arteries get clogged with deposits of cholesterol, known as atherosclerotic plaques
What are the signs and symptoms of cardiac arrest?
Appear to not be breathing
Not moving
Don’t respond to stimulation
What is angina?
Syndrome caused by the supply of oxygen-rich blood to the heart becoming restricted
When does angina usually occur?
During exercise
What medicine is used to treat angina?
Glyceryl trinitrate
What are some less common causes of an MI?
Drug misuse - cocaine, amphetamines, methamphetamines
Hypoxia - CO poisoning
What is the most important test to diagnose a MI?
ECG
What are the 3 main types of acute coronary syndrome?
ST segment elevation myocardial infarction
Non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction
Unstable angina
What is the most serious form of a heart attack?
STEMI - total blockage of coronary artery
Is there cardiac damage during an NSTEMI?
Yes but vessel is only partially blocked not fully
Is there cardiac damage during unstable angina?
No permanent damage but blood supply to the heart is really restricted and it may progress to a STEMI
What is the most common protein measurement for a MI?
Cardiac troponin
