What is a myocardial infarction?
A
Abrupt reduction of blood flow, which results in ischemic heart muscle and then death of the tissue (infarction) due to a blocked coronary artery

Describe the epidemiology of MI
A
More common in men over 55

What are some risk factors of MI?
A
Smoking High cholesterol High blood pressure Diabetes Family history of heart disease.

Describe the signs and symptoms of MI
A
- Sudden and severe chest pain with a crushing, constricting sensation
- Radiation of chest pain into left arm, shoulder, back, jaw neck
- Dyspnoea
- Diaphoresis ( excessive sweating)
- Syncope or pre-syncope
- Epigastric discomfort without or with nausea and vomiting
- Cyanosis and pallor

What is the prognosis of MI?
A
Depends on the infarct size and location and time taken for medical intervention
