Myeloproliferative/Myelodysplastic Disorder Flashcards
1
Q
What are the three myeloproliferative disorders and what cells do they affect primarily?
A
- Primary myelofibrosis - haematopoietic stem cell
- Polycythaemia Vera - erythroid cells
- Essential thrombocytopenia - megakaryocyte
2
Q
What genetic mutation are myeloproliferative disorders associated with?
A
JAK2 (target of JAK2 inhibitors like ruxolitinib)
3
Q
What is myelofibrosis?
A
Cell proliferation leads to bone marrow fibrosis, causing anaemia and leukopenia.
4
Q
Where does haematopoiesis occur in myelofibrosis?
A
Liver and spleen (both become enlarged)
5
Q
What is the management of myeloproliferative disorders?
A
- Primary myelofibrosis - allogenic stem cell transplant, chemotherapy, supportive management
- Polycythaemia Vera - venesection, aspirin, chemotherapy
- Essential thrombocytopenia - aspirin, chemotherapy
6
Q
What is myelodysplastic syndrome?
A
Myeloid cells don’t mature properly which causes anaemia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia. Risk of transformation into AML.
7
Q
What are the primary causes of secondary bone metastases?
A
BLT Plus Ketchup B - breast L - lung T - thyroid P - prostate - osteosclerotic lesions, no high calcium K - kidney
