Q

What are the functions of the different heavy chains?

A
  • IgM: initial phase of antibody production
  • IgG: most prevalent antibody subclass
  • IgA: mucous membrane immunity
  • IgE: parasite immune responses and hypersensitivity

Q

What is a paraprotein and what does it tell you?

A
  • Monoclonal immunoglobulin present in the blood or urine

- Its presence tells us that there is monoclonal proliferation of a B lymphocyte/plasma cell somewhere in the body

Q

What other tests can detect immunoglobulins?

A
  • Total immunoglobulin levels
  • Immunofixation: identifies what class of paraprotein is present e.g. IgF
  • Light chains: assesses imbalance/excess of light chains in the urine/serum
