myelin sheath Flashcards
1
Q
Node of Ranvier
A
a gap in the myelin sheath of a nerve, between adjacent Schwann cells
2
Q
internode
A
stretch of a nerve cell axon sheathed in myelin, between two nodes of Ranvier.
3
Q
schwann cell
A
glial cells that keep peripheral nerve fibres (both myelinated and unmyelinated) alive. In myelinated axons, Schwann cells form the myelin sheath.
4
Q
myelin sheath
A
sheath forms around nerves / speeding up impulses
5
Q
axon
A
carries impulses away from cell body
6
Q
neurilemma
A
the thin sheath around a nerve axon (including myelin where this is present).
