MYCOSES
Infections confined to the outermost layer of the skin or hair.
SUPERFICIAL MYCOSES
- discoloration or depigmentation and scaling of skin
- hypopigmented skin
- no symptoms
- caused by MALASSEZIA FURFUR COMPLEX
TINEA VERSICOLOR
TINEA VERSICOLOR causative agent:
Malassezia furfur
-Presence of macule that is HYPERPIGMENTED
- Brown or black macular patches, primarily on palms
TINEA NIGRA
MAJOR CLIN MANIFESTATION:
- Well demarcated hyperpigrmented/hypopigmented of the skin
- FAWN-COLORED macules
WHITE PIEDRA
TINEA NIGRA is caused by?
Hortaea werneckii
WHITE PIEDRA is caused by?
Trichosporon beigelii ( maam bea’s trans)
Trichophyton ovoides and T. inkin (mahon)
Black nodule along the hair shaft of the patient
BLACK PIEDRA
BLACK PIEDRA is caused by?
Piedra hortae
- TRICHOPHYTON, MICROSPORUM AND EPIDERMOPHYTON
SYMPTOMS: itching, scaling or ringlike patches on skin; brittle, broken hair; and thick, discolored nails

LAB DIAGNOSIS : TINEA VERSICOLOR
CLINICAL MATERIAL : skin scrapings

SPAGHETTI & MEATBALLS
LAB DIAGNOSIS : TINEA NIGRA
> Lactophenol cotton blue
> septated hyphae with BROWN/DARK OLIVACEOUS 2 CELLED CONIDIOSPORES

NODULES (BLACK PIEDRA)
Pigmented center containing ASCUS=ASCOSPORES
LAB DIAGNOSIS: BLACK PIEDRA
- CINICAL MATERIAL : ?
Hairs with hard black nodules
LAB DIAGNOSIS: WHITE PIEDRA
> Demonstration of ARTHROSPORES
- involve the deeper skin layers, muscle, connective tissue and bone
- nonhealing ulcers and presence of draining sinus tracts
SUBCUTANEOUS MYCOSES
Infections involve the integument and its appendages
- may involve stratum corneum or deeper layers of the epidermis
Cutaneous Mycosws
Also known as ORAL CANDIDIASIS
- characterized by coating or individual PAH of PSEUDOMEMBRANOUS WHITE SLOUGH
Oral thrush
Caused by infection with Candida and are very commin in children
DIAPER RASH
Caused by Sporothrix schenckii
- common among gardeners
SPOROTRICHOSIS
MOLD FORM OF SPOROTHRIX
