Mycoplasma Flashcards
Describe Mycoplasma Pneumoniae
No cell wall Single membrane with sterols and cholesterol Divides by binary fission Requires enriched media for growth Morphology: Fried egg
What is P1 Protein?
Characteristic of Mycoplasma: binds to oligosaccharide recpetors -> sticks to cells for growth and replication
How does M.Pneumoniae cause pathology?
Induces an inflammatory response like chlamydia
What is the epidemiology of M.Pneumoniae?
Can cause CA-Pneuoniae
Spreads among family members
What is the clinical presentation of mycoplasma?
HA, Fever, Malaise, Chills
Myalgia
Important: CXR results out of proportion to clinical presentation
How is M.Pneumonia diagnosed?
CXR Cultures (10-14 days) Serology PCR COLD HEMAGGLUTININS= > Bind I Ag or erythrocytes @ 4degC
How is M.Pneumoniae treated?
Macrolides: no cell wall!
Tetracyclines
Fluoroquinolones: Empiric therapy for pneumonia in general
No cell wall -> penicillins ineffective
