My Behaviour Questions From Past Flashcards
Do you have experience working part of a team?
Do you have experience working part of a team?
I have extensive experience working as a member of a team in several different roles. Most notably, I have worked at sea as part of a team, which significant required collaboration in order to ensure that our work was completed and that all were kept safe. My current role as an engineer’s assistant also means that I work as part of a team in every shift, and I also continue to learn from my colleagues and from my supervisor. I read and understand electrical diagrams in order to identify faults, and I then communicate these faults efficiently and clearly to my team. A huge part of our team dynamic is being able to communicate our perspectives and to offer feedback to one another, but my experience has taught me that it is also important to provide support, and seek assistance when its necessary. This is why I believe communicate is always key to good team work.
Do you have experience writing reports, logs or form filling?
In my current role, I am responsible for completing the planned preventive maintenance lists and logbook daily. At sea, I also completed log books, forms, and risk assessments daily. Furthermore, I complete reports throughout my HND in Marine Engineering. This information must be filled out as precisely as possible so that it can be clearly understood by any other drivers or officials who read it. It must clearly state what has happened during the shift, anything unusual reported regarding the tracks and train movement, as well as a conclusion as to why it may have been unusual. Therefore, because of my current and previous experience I understand how vital it is to ensure the clarity of information when keeping records, as it is vital in the running and safety of any organisation.
Have you had situations where you have to think on your feet and make logical situations?
Whilst working as an Assistant Engineer at my current role, myself and two other engineers had put out a fire on one of the machines. With oil flowing through the machines near where the fire was, it was extremely important that we extinguish any flames immediately. As a team, we successfully put out the fire, quickly, efficiently, and calmly. I was able to use my firefightingtraining that I underwent during the Merchant Navy, while also keeping safety in mind and situational awareness for my colleagues during and after the fire. I was also prepared to perform first aid if it was required. This situation put my previous training to the test and made me grateful for my training and my ability to remain cool headed in high pressure situations whilst responding quickly.
Do you have experience of receiving and giving out important information, either face to face, over a phone or through a radio?
I have had experiences of giving important information over the radio, one being cleaning bunkering fuel tanks at 2am in Africa. Prior to cleaning the tanks, the oxygen content needed to be checked several times before going in the tanks with emergency rescue equipment at the entrance, and each person entering the tank had to check in periodically. I have been the person inside cleaning the tank as well as the person on the outside receiving the information, checking in with my colleagues inside the tankover the radio to ensure that they were safe.
During this task, I was completely responsibility for the safety and wellness of my crew whilst they were inside the tank, and all communications had to be done through a radio. During this instance I learned the importance of continued concentration and clear communication, even when performing a task that may feel repetitive.
Do you have experience working on your own?
Do you have experience working on your own?
I regularly work alone, and this requires me to demonstrate, diligence, responsibility, and independent thinking skills. In my current role, I have worked as nightshift engineer, which requires me to work alone, thus without supervision or assistance. Whilst working by myself, I have to display good judgement, make analytical decisions and communicate clearly with the production side of business. I also have a protocol which is used if I need assistance while working alone, which I am always ready to use if needed. Notably, working alone is not a prospect that is unmotivating; while I work extremely well in a team, I am no stranger to regulating myself and my work, and thus I am equally as effective and diligent when working alone.
- Describe a time when you have gone the extra mile to address a customer need or issue?
As one of my first jobs, I worked at Teleperformance call centre as [INSERT JOB TITLE]. This role required me to interact with customers regularly, and provide an excellent level of customer service. Firstly, I worked for Student Finance England. On one occasion, I received a distressed phone call from a foreign customer who was experiencing financial hardship. Whether she received any funds was completely reliant on the forms she was required by the company to fill out. However, she was struggling to complete them as she couldn’t understand what was being asked of her. I promised that I would assist her and remain with her until everything was resolved, and so I immediately spoke to my team leader to seek assistant and support, as well as my supervisor, escalation team, and then my floor manager. Sadly, I was getting nowhere and having little success. I continued to push the issue with my floor manager, who advised me to contact another call centre. Here, I spoke with a manager who told me they would take the case and try to assist the customer as much as possible. In this instance, I showed that I wanted to go the extra mile to help the customer, and I believe this helped me end up in a supervisor role within the firm. I feel that I demonstrated empathy, and this really highlighted to me that I greatly enjoy helping people whilst delivering a good service.
Describe a goal you have set yourself in the past that has led to some aspect of personal/professional development?
Describe a goal you have set yourself in the past that has led to some aspect of personal/professional development?
Completing a Merchant Navy Cadetship was a huge milestone for me, the process of which allowed to me to develop personally in so many ways. This was easily one of the greatest experiences of my life as it enabled me to grow as a person, in numerous ways. For example, it was a result of my training in the Merchant Navy that inspired me to apply myselfpassionately, both academically and professionally, to ensure that I completed my cadetship. Throughout the process, I grew more as an individual than I could have imagined, and I was able to understand myself more deeply as a person. This cadetship taught me so many valuable skills, and fostered some excellent habits. As a result of it, I learned how to managestress, problem-solve, resolve conflicts, actively liste to others, work as a team, and be emotionally resilient.
Describe a situation where you had to adapt yourself to a new situation.
When joining my second ship, I sailed with a Turkish crew for some time. Joining a ship as a cadet will present its challenges, but being British and having no knowledge of Turkish culture meant that I had to integrate myself into my new team. Whilst I am able to work well with others, I was not used to facing such challenges and barriers between myself and my team mates. For example, I came to learn that some of the hand symbols and seated postures that I displayed could be seen as offensive to some of my colleagues. By approaching the situation with empathy, and clearly communicating any issues that arose, I was able to promptly and professionally resolve any issues and facilitate understanding between myself and my new crew. I found that as long as I kept an open mind and communicatedpeacefully, there were no issues. I also joined ships with all Norwegian and Indian crews, and ensured that I demonstrated the same empathy and willingness to learn as I had previously. Because of experiencing these situations, I feel comfortable working with people different cutures. I greatly enjoy meeting people from all parts of the world, as it provides many new learning opportunities and growth.
How would you deal with these challenges?
I believe that the best way to deal with challenges is to at first prepare myself proactively to face them, regardless of the nature of the challenge. I would ensure that I am organised, healthy, and enjoy myself in my down time by doing things I am fond of, such as swimming, visiting the gym, and doing yoga. In the workplace, I deal with challenges by having a clear form of communication with work colleagues to understand any issues that could be relative to me preforming as a driver. I am also excited by and open to all new training opportunities that I will have to undertake. Continuous professional development and personal growth are both very important to me, and it is vital that I am able to pursue these opportunities. By doing so, I am enabling myself to deal with. Challenges as I am consistently working to be the best version of myself.

Current role as a trainee skipper, bring the boat into dry dock to do maintenance on it. The owner let me know that we needed it in the water with in a couple days. So stayed until 7 each day buffing and sanding and painting the following day, so it would be ready for the following day. The owner didn’t ask me to, but I have a lot of respect for the owner and business as well as enjoying my job which helps. Of the 4 trainees that were on I was the only one who offers to stay and help. This ultimately helped the owner get the boat boat back in the water, meaning it could make money which is what the business is all about. The way I see it, what’s good for my business is good for me.
