Mutations revisited Flashcards
1
Q
Types of substitution mutations
A
- silent mutations: no effect on amino acids, redundancy in genetic code
- Missense mutation: different amino acid
- Nonsense mutation: stop codon; most lead to nonfunctional protein
2
Q
Frameshift mutation
A
number inserted or deleted is not a multiple of three, resulting in improper grouping of subsequent nucleotides into codons
3
Q
Spontaneous mutation
A
errors in DNA replication or repair; minimal chance that mutation is advantageous, smaller chance that it confers to drug resistance
4
Q
Mutagens
A
physical/chemical agents that can cause mutations
5
Q
Reading frame
A
on mRNA; triplet grouping of ribonucleotides used by translation machinery during polypeptide synthesis
