Mutations Flashcards
What is the difference between chromosome mutations and DNA mutations?
Chromosome mutations involve changes to parts of or whole chromosomes
DNA mutations are changes to genes due to changes in nucleotide base sequences.
Define a mutation
A change in the amount of, or arrangement of the genetic material in a cell
What are some examples of mutagens?
Tar, uv light, x rays and gamma rays
What are the 2 classes of DNA mutations?
Point mutations where base pairs are substituted for others.
Insertion/deletion mutations where one or more nucleotide pairs are inserted or deleted from a length of DNA. These cause a frame shift
What is an allele?
An alternate version of a gene. It still has the same locus on the chromosome and codes for the same polypeptide but the alteration to the DNA base sequence may alter the protein’s structure.
