Musicking and other positive social determinants of health Flashcards
Musicking and gardening: primarily positive pathways to SDOH?
- When and how are these factors helpful vs. Harmful
- Music wasn’t of value, other things were taking over like the focus on money and productivity
- The same activity/occupation can look different defining on where people are coming from, financially, mentally etc.
- Music related to culture
- It did not change the aspects of gardening that were considered negative, like in community gardening there are many rules, some of which might be challenging to follow for people with mental health issues
“A social determinant of health approach acknowledges a role for individual action, but also recognizes that the individuals’ choices are strongly influenced by their social, circumstances over the life course and that positive or negative effects of these social determinants accumulate across the life course” (2018, p. 19, Stewart & Irons)
What does this mean?
‘Positive’ vs. ‘Negative’ SDOH - understanding helpful and harmful pathways
How is ‘musicking’ occupation?
‘Occupation’ refers to processes of doing, being, becoming, belonging
- Tendency to think of ‘occupations; as “discrete variables” (e.g., “music” as a noun) to measure outcomes.
- Interrelated (responsive) aspects of the processes might then be missed.
- SJMA activities supporting music-making are included… as MUSICKING
Research question of this guest lecturer? and other questions
What are the embodied experiences of musicking and belonging for children and youth
- Builds on previous research at SJMA on social emotional learning
Other questions:
- How to include perspectives of newcomer families specifically?
- How could we centre the ‘voice’ of students, yet see them in relation to others (families, teacher, researcher etc.)?
Methodology?
- Doing art and discussing the children’s experiences with playing music
