How do you recognise the Boogie-Woogie?
Is is instantly recognisable by it’s distinctive left hand part which as a strong element of ostinato.
What is Boogie Woogie?
A style of piano blues. Often based on the 12-bar blues chord pattern, but it is usually played at a much faster tempo.
What is a walking bass?
Bass line of the boogie-Woogie.
What is osinato?
A repeated section, can be a from a few notes to a number of bars.
What is ragtime?
Syncopated or ragged rhythm.
Solo piano, the entertainer and maple leaf rag.
What is Dixieland?
Dixieland Jazz - also known as traditional jazz - is jazz created in New Orleans. It usually has a clarinet playing the tune, and is easily recognisable.
Flutter tonguing.
What is Swing?
After Big Band. Composed, less energetic, and suited to dancing.
15 or more players.
3 trumpets, 3 trombones.
A clarinet, two saxophones, two tenor saxophones.
Piano, guitar, string bass and drums.
What is big band?
Came before swing - by black musicians who worked together as a band to gain money. They usually lived together.
What is Scat Singing?
Vocal improvisation, nonsense words.
What is blues?
Specific chord progressions, of which the twelve bar blues are most common.
Vocals, acoustic or electric guitar, harmonica, piano and drums/percussion.
