A

1.3 dynamics

A

Dynamics are how loud or quiet the music is. FORTE (LOUD) dynamics to represent power; PIANO (SOFT) dynamics to represent weakness/calm/resolve.
EXTREME DYNAMICS or SUDDEN DYNAMIC CHANGES to ‘shock the listener’.

A

Texture is how thick or thin the music is (how many instruments are playing). THIN textures used for bleak or lonely scenes; THICK textures used for active scenes or battles.

1.5 rhythm and metre

A

Rhythm is a pattern of notes that wraps around the pulse.
Metre is the amount of notes in a bar. 2/4 or 4/4 for Marches (battles), 3/4 for Waltzes, 4/4 for “Big Themes” in Westerns. IRREGULAR TIME SIGNATURES used for tension. OSTINATO rhythms for repeated sounds e.g. horses.

1.6 duration

A

Duration is how long or short you play a note. LONG notes often used in Westerns to describe vast open spaces and in Sci-Fi soundtracks to describe outer space; SHORT notes often used to describe busy, chaotic or hectic scenes.

A

Harmony includes the mood of the music and chords used. Major – Happy

A

Articulation is how the music sounds, Staccato or legato. LEGATO for flowing or happy scenes, STACCATO for ‘frozen’ or ‘icy’ wintery scenes. ACCENTS (>) for violence or shock.
