Q

How do artists receive income from covers of their song?

A

Owner of the copyright in a composition can authorise the first release of a recording of that music to the public
But once that release has happened, anyone can then record and release a cover recording of the composition, as long as they pay the appropriate ‘mechanical license fee. The right to make covers is contained in the copyright act, and it is known as the ‘STATUTORY LICENSE’
