Leitmotif
A leitmotif is a recurring musical idea which
is associated with a particular theme, time,
place or character.
Pre-1930s
Films were silent because the ability to record
sound with them had not yet been invented. In
cinemas, a piano player or small orchestra would
play music that matched the mood of the action
on screen.
1927
“The Jazz Singer” was the first film that had music
and sound synchronised to moving picture.
1930s to 1950s
Orchestras used nearly all the time by composers
of film music.
1950s onwards
Jazz and pop music begin to be used in films.
Electronic instruments are also used when they
are invented e.g. synthesizers
