Development gap
The difference between the world’s richest and poorest
countries.
Gross national income (GNI)
The total value of goods and services produced by a
country (how much money it makes in a year).
Life expectancy
The average age someone can live to.
Birth rate
The amount of births per 1000 people.
Death rate
The amount of deaths per 1000 people.
Infant mortality
The number of babies who die before their first
birthday, per 1000 live births
Literacy rate
The % of people who have basic reading and writing
skills.
Human
Development
Index (HDI)
A mixture of life expectancy, literacy rate and GNI per
person. Measured from 0-1, where 1 is highest.
Quality of life
The general well-being of people, including health,
education and wealth.
Standard of
living
The amount of wealth available to people
International
migration
When people move between countries.
Refugee
A person forced to move from their country of origin as
they are threatened there.
Investment
When a country or business gives money or expertise,
in order to make a profit o to improve the lives of
people.
Aid
When a country or organisation donates (gives)
resources to another country.
