Musculoskeletal system Flashcards
How many bones and muscles are in the human body?
There are 206 bones and 600 muscles.
What is the role of the skeleton?
To provide protection to soft internal organs of the body, and to provide framework.
Importance to pharmacists?
It’s important for intramuscular (IM) drug delivery, which allows fast absorption of drugs or slower release of depot preparations.
What are the three main muscles used for intramuscular injections?
Deltoid (shoulder)
Gluteus maximus (buttock)
Quadriceps (front thigh)
Why are the deltoid, gluteus maximus, and quadriceps muscles commonly used for IM injections?
Because they are large and easily accessible, making them ideal for administering medications.
What is a depot preparation?
A depot preparation is a type of intramuscular injection that uses a non-aqueous solution for slow, long-term drug release.
What is the difference between fast absorption and depot preparations in IM injections?
I. Fast absorption: Aqueous solutions are absorbed quickly.
II. Depot preparations: Non-aqueous solutions provide a slower, sustained release.
