Q

What is slipped capital/upper femoral epiphysis?

A

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) occurs when weakness in the proximal femoral growth plate allows displacement of the capital femoral epiphysis. SCFE can be an acute or chronic cause of limp in adolescents.

SCFE is caused by a disruption of the growth plate at the femoral head, causing the epiphysis to slip to an abnormal postero-inferior position. Patients may have an abnormally widened growth plate at the proximal femur.
