Musculo-Skeletal System Flashcards
What are the 2 divisions of the skeleton and their functions?
- Axial Skeleton for protection
- Appendicular Skeleton for movement (Limbs)
Name 2 long bones
Femur, Tibia, Fibula, Humerus, Radius, Ulna, Phalanges
Name a short bone
Calcaneum
Name a flat bone
Skull, Sternum, Scapula, Ilium
Name an irregular bone
Sphenoid, Mandible, Vertebrae
Name a sesamoid bone
Patella
What is a pneumatic bone?
- One containing an air filled cavity
Eg. Sphenoid
What is an accessory bone?
An extra bone due to improper fusion. Present in some people, not all. Eg. Os Trigonium
How many bones does a normal human being have?
- 206
What is a Condyle?
- A rounded protuberance at the end of bones, for articulation
What is a facet?
- Flat surface on a bone
Which bone is a trochanter specific to?
- Femur
What is the definition of a joint?
- The point where 2 or more bones meet (articulate)
In terms of structure, name the 3 types of joint
- Fibrous (middle radio-ulnar)
- Cartiliginous (Pubic Symphysis)
- Synovial
What type of joint is the Atlanto-Axial Joint?
- Synovial Pivot Joint
- Capable of rotation only
- Between Atlas and Axis
Name the parts of a synovial joint
- Fibrous Capsule
- Synovial Membrane
- Articular Hyaline Cartilage
- Synovial Fluid
Which part of a synovial joint secretes synovial fluid?
The Synovial Membrane
What bone does the sternal end of the clavicle articulate with?
- Manubrium
What is the acromioclavicular joint?
- Articulation point between the acromial end of the clavicle and the acromion of the scapula
What is the benefit of curvature in the clavicle?
- Gives strength
Where is the weakest point of the clavicle?
What is the reason for this?
- Border between lateral 1/3 and medial 2/3
- This is where the change of shape occurs
In what direction will the medial part of the clavicle move if fracture occurs?
Which muscle is responsible for this?
- It will rise/ move up
- Sternocleidomastoid
What is the main danger in clavicular fracture?
- Puncture of the subclavian artery
Which bone is the last to ossify?
- Clavicle
