Musculo Skeletal Anatomy - Week 3 - Muscles of the Thoracic region Flashcards
What is the name of the muscles in the anterior thoracic region?
Serratus Anterior
What is the functions of the Serratus Anterior?
Draws scapula anterolaterally, suspends
scapula on thoracic wall, rotates scapula.
Where are the Serratus posterior superior and inferior located in the thoracic region?
- Both of these muscles are in the
intermediate layer of the extrinsic
musculature of the back - Both run from the vertebral column
to the rib cage
What are the names of the intercostal muscles and where are they located?
External intercostal muscle
- The most superficial set of muscles
that occupy the 11 intercostal spaces
Internal intercostal muscle
- Originate from the inferior
margin of costal cartilage and
inner lip of costal groove
Innermost intercostal muscle
- Originate from the inner surface
of the costal groove of the ribs, deep to the origin of the internal
intercostal muscles.
Where are the Levatores costarum muscles located?
These are deep muscles of the back.
Parts of the intrinsic muscles of the
chest wall.
Spanning from C7 to T12 levels.
Where are the Transversus thoracis muscles located?
Found on the inner surface of the anterior chest wall.
Is organized into several
slips that radiate from the
body and xiphoid process
of sternum towards the
costal cartilages of ribs 2-6
Where are the Subcostales muscles located?
Thin muscles found on the
inner surface of the
posterior thoracic wall
bridging two or three
intercostal spaces
