What are the functions of the muscular system?
- Movement
- Posture
- Muscular movement squeezes the blood and lymph vessels
- Muscular activity produces heat in cellular tissues
Muscle at the base of the back of the cranium
Occipitalis
Muscle over the forehead
Frontalis
Muscle at the side of the head stretching to the mandible
Temporalis
Muscle between the brows, extending down to the nasal bone.
Procerus
Muscle between the eyebrows
Corrugator
Muscle surrounds the eye socket
Orbicularis oculi
Muscle crosses the bridge of the nose
Nasalis
Muscle surrounds the mouth
Orbicularis oris
Muscle runs from the side of mouth
Risorius
Muscle at the sides of the cheek
Buccinator
Muscle along the zygomatic bone/cheek
Zygomatic major/minor
Muscle over the centre of the chin
Mentalis
One each side from the mouth over the mandible
Triangularis
From the chin down the front and sides of the neck
Platysma
One each side of the neck running from the back of the ear to the sternum
Sternocleidomastoid
A large diamond shaped muscle which extends from the occipital bone to the vertebra in the thoracic region and across the top of the shoulders
Trapezius
Lies over the shoulder (like a shoulder pad)
Deltoid
Back of the neck between the cervical vertebra and the scapula
Levator scapula
Front of the chest, lies under the breast tissue
Pectoralis major
Smaller than the pectoralis major, it lies beneath it on the front of the chest
Pectoralis minor
Anterior upper arm
Biceps
Posterior upper arm
Triceps
