Muscular System Flashcards
Perimysium
Connective tissue surrounding a fascicle
Epimysium
Connective tissue ensheathing the entire muscle
Sarcomere
The contractile unit of muscle
Muscle fiber
Same as muscle cell
Endomysium
Thin connective tissue investing each muscle cell
Sarcolemma
Plasma membrane of muscle cell
Myofibril
A long, filamentous organelle found within muscle cells that have a banded appearance
Myofilament
Actin- or myosin-containing structure
Tendon
Cordlike extension of connective tissue beyond the muscle, serving to attach it to the bone
Fascicle
Bundle of muscle cells
Contraction Mechanism
- Acetylcholine released into neuromuscular junction.
- Acetyl. diffuses across junction; binds to receptors on sarcolemma.
- Depolarization; action potential generated
- Action potential=SR release Ca ions.
- Ca ion concentration at myofilaments increases; myofilaments slide.
- Ca reabsorbed into SR; concentration at myofilaments decreases.
- Muscle cell relaxes and lengthens.
Prime Mover
Muscle that provides the major force for producing a specific movement (AKA agonist)
Antagonist
Muscle that opposes or reverses a particular movement
Synergists
Help prime movers by (1) adding extra force to same movement or (2) reducing undesirable or unnecessary movements that might occur
