Muscular System Flashcards
what are the three types of muscle fibres
- type 1 (slow oxidative)
- type 2a (fast oxidative glycolic)
- type 2b (fast glycolic)
functional characteristics of type 1
uses oxygen
low fatiguability
functional characteristics of type 2a
fast contraction speed
high force produced
functional characteristics of type 2b
don’t use oxygen
use glucose
structural characteristics of type 1
high capillary count
high myoglobin count
structural characteristics of type 2a
large neurone size
medium capillary count
structural characteristics of type 2b
large motor neurone size
high volume of photo creatine
whats wave summation
occurs when stimulations are delivered to a muscle fiber faster than it is able to completely relax.
whats motor unit
a motor neurone and its muscle fibres
what are motor neurones
nerve cells which transmit the brain’s instructions as electrical impulses to the muscles
whats the all or none law
where a sequence of impulses has to be sufficient intensity to stimulate all of the muscle fibres in a motor unit to order for them to contract. if not, none of them contract.
whats spatial summation
when the strength of a contraction changes by altering the number and size of the muscle motor units.
