Muscular System Flashcards
Skeletal Muscle
A voluntary muscle that is attached to bone and can be contracted or relaxed through conscious control.
Smooth Muscle
Involuntary muscle (is not controlled by conscious thought process)
Surrounds internal organs and is found throughout your respiratory tract, stomach, intestines, and urinary tract
Contracts and relaxes to move continents through body system passageways
Cardiac Muscle
Found only in the heart
Unconsciously controlled
As cardiac muscles involuntarily contract it pumps blood from the heart to the blood vessels
Function 1
Holding body parts in position and making movement possible
Function 2
Providing a protective covering for internal organs
Function 3
Producing, through movement, nearly 85% of the heart that keeps the body warm
Function 4
Moving food through the digestive system
Function 5
Aiding blood flow through the veins as blood returns to the heart
Function 6
Assisting with the movement of fluids through the ducts and vessels of the other body systems
Automaticity
The ability of a muscle to contract without the involvement of a nerve supply. Automacity is a poperty of viseceral, smooth and cardiac muscles
Contractility
The ability of a skeletal muscle to contract; The bicep muscles contract when you flex
Elasticity
Skeletal muscle fibers to resume their resting length when stretching force is removed; spring
Excitability
Skeletal muscle relieves and respond to a nerve impulse by contracting; nerves send a message to the heart muscle; the heart pumps blood
Extensibility
Skeletal muscles to be stretched is evident in the hamstrings and calf muscles when you touch your toes for example.
