Muscular Skeletal System Flashcards
3 different types of muscle
- Skeletal
- Smooth
- Cardiac
Main functions of muscles
- Produce movement
- Sustain body posture and position
- Maintain body temperature
- Stabilise joints
- Aid digestion
Skeletal Muscle
- Voluntary Muscle
- Connect to bone
- Allows wide range of movement
- Protect vital organs within the body
What is a muscle
Group of muscle tissues which contract together to produce a force.
Structure of muscle
Muscle fibres bundles together and wrapped in connective tissue called fascia.
These fibres are composed of long chains of protein called myofilaments
Myofilaments are made up of smaller units called myofibrils
Myofibrils contain even smaller structure called Sarcomere
Sarcomere- basic functional units of muscle contraction.
Basic movement of muscle
When a skeletal muscle contracts the Sarcomere shorten and the myofibrils within the muscle fibres pull on the tendons that are attached to the bones
This movement causes the bones to move and results in desired muscle action.
Quadricep muscles
- Rectus femoris
- Vastus medialis
- Vastus lateralis
- Vastus intermedius
Hamstring muscles
- Semitendinosus
- Semimembranosus
- Bicep femoris long head
- Bicep femoris short head
