What is Skeletal Muscle?
Skeletal muscle tissue makes up voluntary muscles. It is normally striated.
What is Cardiac Muscle?
Cardiac muscle is muscle of the heart
What is Smooth Muscle
Smooth Muscle is made out of nonstriated cells, and are used for your internal organs.
What is a neuron?
A neuron is the functional unit of the nervous system, a nerve cell.
What is a synapse?
A synapse is the interface between a neuron and another cell
What is a neurotransmitter?
A neurotransmitter is a chemical released by a neuron which diffuses across the synaptic cleft, enabling the neuron to communicate with another cell.
What is Muscle tone?
Muscle tone is the state of partial contraction in a muscle, even when the muscle is not being used.
What is an origin?
The place that the tendon attaches to the relatively stationary bone.
What is an insertion?
The point at which a muscle’s tendon attaches to the more moveable bone.
What is the belly of a muscle?
The largest part of the muscle, which actually contains the muscle cells.
What is mastication?
The process of chewing.
What are Extrinsic hand muscles?
Muscles in teh forearm that create movement in the hands.
What are Intrinsic hand muscles?
Muscles in the hand that produce movement in the hand.
What are the three types of muscle classification?
Skeletal, smooth, and cardiac.
How many muscles are there in the body?
There are about 640 skeletal muscles in the body.
What attaches muscles to bones?
Tendons.
Can muscles contract and lengthen on their own?
Muscles can contract on their own, but they must be passively stretched by an antagonistic muscle.
What are the criteria used in naming skeletal muscles?
- Muscle size
- Muscle shape
- Location of the muscle
- Orientation of the muscle’s fascicles
- Muscle origin and insertion
- Number of heads (origins) on the muscle
- Muscle Function
