Sternocleidomastoid
• Location
Runs from the sternum to the clavicle bone and the temporal bone; runs down the side of the front of the neck
• Action
Flexes the neck; rotates and lowers the head
Trapezius
• location
A large triangular muscle covering the back of the neck and the upper back
• action
Draws the head backwards and allows movement at the shoulder
Occipitalis
• location
Covers the back of the base of the skull
• action
Draws scalp backwards
Pectoralis major
• location
Across the upper chest (underneath the breasts) from the clavicle, sternum and the ribs to the top of the humerus, forming the front wall of the axilla
• action
Used in throwing and climbing to adduct the arm, drawing it forwards and rotating it medially
Pectoralis minor
• location
Underneath the pectoralis major. It’s origin is the third, fourth and fifth ribs and it inserts into the outer corner of the scapula
• action
Draws the shoulder downwards and forwards
Deltoid
• location
over the tops of the shoulder from the clavicle and scapula to the upper part of the humerus.

abducts the arm to a horizontal position aids in further abduction and in drawing the arm backwards and forwards
