Cervical Vertebrae
Amount - 7
Location - the neck
Function
these vertebrae form the top of the spinal column
the atlas is the first vertebrae connects skull, allows nodding movement
The axis is the second vertebrae allows rotation of the head
Hyoid
Amount - 1
Location - an irregular u shaped bone at the back of the neck
Function - anchors and supports the tongue
Thoracic vertebrae
Amount - 12
Location - upper and middle back
Function - the rib cage joins to the thoracic vertebrae and protects the body’s vital organs I.e, the heart and lungs
Clavicle
Amount - 2
Location - slender long bones at the base of the neck
Function - commonly called the collar bones, these form a joint with the sternum and the scapula bones, allowing movement at the shoulder
Scapula
Amount - 2
Location - triangular flat bones in the upper back
Function - the scapulae provide attachment for muscles that move the arms. The shoulder girdle, which allows movement at the shoulder, is composed of the clavicles and scapulae
Humerus
Amount - 2
Location - the upper long bones of the arms
Function - forms a joint with the scapulae, this is called a ball-and-socket joint and allows movement in any direction
Sternum
Amount - 1
Location - the breastbone
Function - protects the inner organs l, provides a surface for muscle attachment and supports muscle movement, the sternum is connected to the ribs by cartilage
Ribs
Amount - 12 pairs
Location - upper body and chest area
Function - protects inner organs such as the heart and lungs
1st 7 pairs attach to the sternum
1st 10 pairs attach to the thoracic vertebrae at back
8th - 10th pairs fuse with the rib above
11th - 12th pairs are called floating ribs as they are unattached at the front
