Muscles Short Answer Flashcards
Identity the three types of muscle tissue
1) Skeletal
2) Cardiac
3) Smooth
Understand the basic structure of a sarcomere
A sarcomere is the basic contractile units of muscle fibers, composed of thick (myosin) and thin (actin) filament, with Z-discs marking the boundaries. The arrangements of these filaments allows for muscles contraction through sliding filament theory.
1 Phases of Muscle Contraction
Latent Phase: The time between stimulus and the beginning of contractions.
2 Phases of Muscle Contraction
Contraction Phase: The period when muscle fibers shortens and tensions increases
3 Phases of Muscle Contraction
Relaxation Phase: The muscles returns to its resting state after contraction
Discuss metabolism during muscles contraction
ATP is the primarily energy source for muscle contraction , generated through aerobic respiration (using oxygen) and anaerobic metabolism (without oxygen). Creatine phosphate can quickly regenerate ATP during short burst of activity.
Explains the role of lactic acid
During intense exercise, when oxygen is scarce, lactic acid is produced as a by product of anaerobic respiration, which can lead to muscle fatigue
