Muscles & Papillae of the Tongue Flashcards
Intrinsic Tongue Muscles (4 types)
- Superior longitudinal
- Transverse
- Vertical
- Inferior longitudinal
What is the purpose of the intrinsic tongue muscles?
shape the tongue
Innervation of the intrinsic tongue muscles?
12th cranial nerve (motor) and hypoglossal nerve (XII)
Blood supply of intrinsic tongue muscles?
lingual artery
Extrinsic Tongue Muscles (3 types)
- Genioglossus: protrudes tongue
- Styloglossus: retracts tongue
- Hyoglossus: depresses tongue
What is the purpose of the extrinsic tongue muscles?
moves/controls position of the tongue
Innervation of the extrinsic tongue muscles?
12th cranial nerve (motor) or hypoglossal nerve (XII)
Blood supply of extrinsic tongue muscles?

Foliate papillae purpose?
contains taste buds
Circumvallate papillae purpose?
10-14, contain taste buds and associated with ducts of Von Ebner’s glands (large)
Fungiform papillae purpose?
fewer, contain taste buds, red, mushroom-shaped
Filliform papillae purpose?
** MOST NUMEROUS BUT DO NOT CONTAIN TASTE BUDS **
keratinized tissue; gives tongue “velvety” texture; associated with geographic and hairy tongue
Folliate Lingual papillae purpose?
located on lateral surface (side) of the tongue, some contain taste buds
*Sulcus Terminalis purpose?
separation of 1/3 posterior and 2/3 anterior portions of the tongue with the foramen cecum at the point
