Changes the shape of the tongue to permit licking, lapping, food prehension, mastication and swallowing.
Origin of m. genioglossus
Medial surface of the pars incisiva of the mandible, immediately caudal to the origin of m. geniohyoideus
Insertion og m. geniglossus
Basihyoideum and ceratohyoideum
Function of m. genioglossus
Caudal fibers draw the tongue rostrally; Rostral fibers depress the tip of the tongue.
Origin of m. hyoglossus
Lateral basihyoideum and the thyrohyoideum
Insertion of m. hyoglossus
Caudal part of the tongue
Function of m. hyoglossus
retracts and depresses the tongue
Origin of m. styloglossus
Dorsal end of the stylohyoideum
Insertion of m. stylohyoideum
The three heads insert on different levels along the ventro-lateral and ventral surfaces of the tongue.
Function of m. stylohyoideus
When the heads function independently, they depress the region of their insertion.
Acting together, they retract the tongue.
