Muscles of the larynx Flashcards
Origin of m. sternothyroideus
First costal cartilage
Insertion of m. sternothyroideus
Lamina of the thyroid cartilage
Function of m. sternothyroideus
Retraction of the larynx, hyoid apparatus and tongue
Origin of m. cricoarytenoideus dorsalis
Dorso-laterally on the cricoid cartilage lamina
Insertion of m. cricoarytenoideus dorsalis
Muscular process of the arytenoid cartilage
Function of m. cricoarytenoideus dorsalis
Opens the rima glottides (laryngeal entrance). Swings the vocal process laterally by drawing the arytenoid cartilage caudo-medially; it is the only abductor of the vocal cords!
Origin of m. cricothyroideus
Lateral surface of the cricoid cartilage
Insertion of m. cricothyroideus
Caudal and medial surface of the thyroid lamina
Function of m. cricothyroideus
Rotates the cricoid cartilage about the cricothyroid articulation, which makes the dorsal part of the cricoid (and therefore the arytenoids) to move caudally. This tenses the vocal cords
Origin of m. vocalis
The floor of the āUā formed by the thyroid cartilage
Insertion of m. vocalis
Vocal process of the arytenoid cartilage
Function of m. vocalis
Relaxation of the vocal cord by drawing the arytenoid cartilage ventrally
