Muscles Of The Tongue Flashcards
Dorsum
Tongue surface
Front to Back
tip
blade
back
Median Sulcus
divides dorsum in half
Sulci Terminalis
runs diagonally foramen cecum
Papilae
taste buds, posterior third
Lingual Frenum
anchors tongue to floor of mouth
Intrinsic
Superior Longitudinal Muscle
unpaired
origin\insertion - near surface runs back to front
action - shorten tongue, raise the tip
Intrinsic
Inferior Longitudinal Muscle
unpaired
origin/insertion - under surface, back to front
action - shorten tongue and lower the tip
Intrinsic
Transverse Muscle
origin/insertion - medial sulcus to lateral edges of tonge
action - narrows and elongates tonge
Intrinsic
Vertical Muscle
origin - on the surface
insertion - undersurface
action - flattening the tongue
Extrinsic
Genioglossus Muscle
origin - posterior, midline of mandible
insertion - fibers fan out into body of tongue
action - if tongue is out pulls it in, if its up pulls it down
pull toward mandible origin
Extrinsic
Styloglossus Muscle
origin - styloid process of temporal bone
insertion - fibers fan anteriorly/inferiorly to inferior longitudinal and hypoglossus
action - draws tongue up and back
Extrinsic
Hypoglossus Muscle
origin - upper surface of hyoid
insertion - fibers go vertical to posterior half of tongue
action - retract and lower tongue
Extrinsic
Glossopalatine (palatoglossus) Muscle
origin - anterior surface of soft palate
insertion - fibers go down and lateral to side of tongue
action - raise back of tongue or lower soft palate
