Muscles of the thorax and abdomen Flashcards
Synergist
The two muscles work together to carry out the function
Antagonist
The two muscles that oppose one another
3 primary functions of the Pectoralis major
-It flexes the whole arm at the shoulder joint
-It adducts (pulls) the whole arm at the shoulder joint
-Helps to rotate the arm immediately/internal rotation at the shoulder joint
Synergist to the pectoralis major
Flexion of the forearm at the shoulder;
-Coraco brachialis
Adduction of the forearm;
-Coracobrachialis
-Latissimus dorsi
-Teres major
Medial rotation;
-Subscapularis
-Latissimus dorsi
-Teres major
Antagonist to the pectoralis major
Flexion of the forearm at the shoulder;
-Teres major
-Latissimus dorsi
Abducts at the shoulder;
-Deltoid muscle
-Supraspinatus
Lateral rotation;
-Infraspinatus
-Teres minor
External intercostals
-Help to elevate the ribs, they pull the ribs up
-Provide elevation of the ribs for inhalation
Internal intercostals
-Depress the ribs, they pull the ribs down for a forced exhalation
-Antagonist with the external intercostals
Serratus anterior
-Protracts the scapula along with the pectoralis minor
Pectoralis minor
-Helps to protract the scapula
-Insertion point is the coraco process of the scapula
-Origin is ribs T2-5
-Synergist to serratus anterior which also protracts the scapula
Subclavius
-Muscle underneath the clavicle
-Depresses the clavicle
Abdominal muscles (superficial to deep)
-External oblique (most superficial)
-Internal oblique
-Rectus abdominis
-Transverse abdominis (most deep)
External oblique
-Helps flex the vertebral column
-Compresses the contents of the abdomen to increase the intraabdominal pressure to assist in forced exhalation
Internal oblique
-Carries out the same function as the external oblique
-Helps flex the vertebral column
-Compresses the contents of the abdomen to increase the intraabdominal pressure to assist in forced exhalation
Rectus abdominis (6 pack muscles)
-Flexes the veterbral coulumn
-Compress the contents of the abdomen to increase intraabdominal pressure to assist in forced exhalation
Transversus abdominis
-Compresses the contents of the abdomen to increase the intraabdominal pressure to assist in forced exhalation
