Muscles Of The Lumbar Spine Flashcards
What is the origin of the internal abdominal obliques?
Iliac crest, thoracolumbar fascia
What is the insertion of the internal abdominal obliques?
Inferior borders of ribs 10-12, linea alba, pectin pubis
What is the action of the internal abdominal obliques?
Bilateral contraction= expiration. Trunk flexion
Unilateral contraction= trunk lateral flexion to same side, trunk rotation to same side
What is the origin of the external abdominal oblique?
External surfaces of ribs 5-12
What is the insertion of the external abdominal obliques?
anterior half of Iliac crest, linea alba, pubic tubercle, ASIS
What is the action of the external abdominal obliques?
Bilateral contraction= expiration, trunk flexion
Unilateral contraction= trunk rotation to opposite side and lateral flexion to same side
What is the origin of the Rectus abdominis?
Pubic symphysis, pubic crest
What is the insertion of the Rectus abdominis?
Xiphoid process, costal cartilages of ribs 5-7
What is the action of the Rectus abdominis?
Trunk flexion, expiration, compresses abdominal viscera
What is the origin of the transversus abdominis?
Costal cartilages of ribs 7-12, thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest, iliopectineal arch
What is the insertion of the transversus abdominis?
Pecten pubis, pubic crest, linea alba
What is the action of the transversus abdominis?
Bilateral contraction= compresses abdominal viscera, expiration
Unilateral contraction= trunk rotation to same side
What is the origin of the Multifidus?
Superior articular processes of C4-C7, transverse processes of all thoracic vertebra, mammillary process of lumbar vertebra, posterior aspect of sacrum, PSIS
What is the insertion of the Multifidus?
Lateral aspect of spinous processes of vertebrae 2-5 levels above origin
What is the action of the Multifidus?
Bilateral contraction= trunk extension
Unilateral contraction= trunk rotation to opposite side and lateral flexion to same side
