Muscles of the Gluteal Region Flashcards
Name the Muscles of the Gluteal Region
Gluteus maximus Gluteus medius Gluteus minimus Tensor fascia latae Piriformis Obturator internus Gemelli, superior and inferior Quadratus femoris
Gluteus Maximus - Origin
Dorsal Ilium, Sacrum and Coccyx
Gluteus Maximus - Insertion
Iliotibial tract (IT Band), which inserts into lateral condyle of tibia Gluteal tuberosity of femur
Gluteus Maximus - Innervation
Inferior Gluteal Nerve (L5, S1, S2)
Gluteus Maximus - Action(s)
*Extends a flexed thigh (when rising from seated position or climbing stairs)
Stabilizes lateral knee
Gluteus Medius - Origin
External surface of ilium (Superior Margin)
Gluteus Medius - Insertion
Greater trochanter of femur (Lateral Surface)
Gluteus Medius - Innervation
Superior Gluteal Nerve (L4, L5, S1)
Gluteus Medius - Action(s)
Abduct and anterior portions MEDIALLY rotate hip joint
Keep pelvis level when opposite leg is elevated
Gluteus Minimus - Origin
External surface of ilium (inferior to gluteus minimus)
Gluteus Minimus - Insertion
Greater trochanter of femur (Anterior Surface)
Gluteus Minimus - Innervation
Superior Gluteal Nerve (L4, L5, S1)
Gluteus Minimus - Action(s)
Abduct and anterior portions MEDIALLY rotate hip joint
Keep pelvis level when opposite limb is elevated
Tensor Fasciae Latae - Origin
Anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS)
Anterior part of iliac crest
Tensor Fasciae Latae - Insertion
Iliotibial tract, which attaches to lateral condyle of tibia (Gerdy’s Tubercle)
