Muscles Of The Back Flashcards
What nerve supplies the trapezius muscle and what are the nerve roots?
Accessory nerve, C3,4
On what spinous processes does the trapezius muscle originate?
C7-T12
Where does the trapezius muscle insert?
Superior part of crest of spine of scapula, acromion and lateral 1/3 of posterior clavicle.
What function does the trapezius muscle has?
Movement of the scapula:
Superior - elevates, middle - retracts, inferior - depresses.
What is the function of the rhomboid muscles?
Elevation and retraction of scapula
What nerve innervates the rhomboid muscles?
Dorsal scapula nerve, C4,5
What spinous processes do the rhomboid muscles originate from?
T2-T5
Which rhomboid muscle inserts onto the scapula at the root of the spine?
Minor
Where does rhomboid major insert?
Onto the posterior of the medial border of the scapula between the root of spine and inferior angle.
What nerves innervate th levator scapulae?
C3,c4 and branch from dorsal scapula nerve.
Where on the scapula does levator scapulae insert?
Medial border on the posterior between the root of spine and superior angle.
What is the function of levator scapulae?
Elevation of the scapula.
Name two muscles innervated by the axillary nerve.
Teres minor and deltoid.
Where does the deltoid muscle insert?
Deltoid tuberosity.
Where does the deltoid muscle originate?
Inferior edge of crest of spine of scapula, lateral margin of acromion and anterior border of lateral 1/3 of Clavicle.
What functions does the deltoid muscle perform?
Abduction of the arm, clavicular fibres flex, posterior fibres extend.
What nerve innervates the latissimus dorsi muscle?
Thoracodorsal nerve C6-C8.
Where on the humerus does latissimus dorsi insert?
Floor of the Intertubecular sulcus.
What are the functions of latissimus dorsi?
It extends, Medially rotates and adducts the arm.
What are the four rotator cuff muscles and what is their function?
Subscapularis, supraspinatous, infraspinatous and teres minor. Stabilise the shoulder joint.
What muscles are innervated by the supra scapular nerve?
Supraspinatous and infraspinatous. It’s roots are C4,5,6
Where does supraspinatous insert on the humerus?
It inserts onto the superior facet on greater tubercle.
Where does infraspinatous insert on humerus?
Middle facet of greater tubercle.
What is the function of infraspinatous?
Lateral rotation of the arm
Where does teres minor insert on the humerus?
Inferior facet of the greater tubercle.
Where does teres minor originate on the scapula?
Middle part of lateral border of scapula.
What is the innervation of teres major?
Lower subscapular nerve (c5,6)
What is the function of teres major and how does its insertion help this?
It adducts and Medially rotates the arm. It inserts on the medial lip of the Intertubecular groove which means it attached on the front of the humerus.
Where does subscapularis insert?
Lesser tubercle of humerus.
What nerve inervates subscapularis?
Upper and lower subscapular nerves (C5,6,7)
Where does teres major originate from on the scapula?
Posterior surface of inferior spine.
I what movement is rotation of the scapula necessary?
Abduction of the arm above 90degrees.
