Muscles of Respiration_ Physiology Flashcards
What are the types of pleural linings?
Parietal pleurae
visceral pleurae
What is parietal pleurae?
thoracic linings and attaches to the chest wall
What is visceral pleurae?
encases the lungs
inner layer of the lungs, blood vessels, nerves and bronchi
What is the purpose of the cuiboidal cells?
produces a mucous solution and is released b/t the visceral/parietal linings
provides a gliding substances of the lungs in the thorax (so the lungs don’t stick to the linings
What is the primary muscle for respiration?
the diaphragm
What are main characteristics or components of the diaphragm?
- separates thorax from abdomen
- central tendon = center of the diaphragm
- phrenic nerve of the ANS = bilateral innervation from the spinal nerves C3-C4-C5
Where is the diaphragm attached at? (3 parts)
- xiphoid process
- ribs 7-11
- lumbar vertebrae
What happens when the diaphragm contacts?
It expands the lungs
