Muscles of mastication Flashcards
How many muscles of mastication is there?
4
What are the muscles called?
- The masseter
- The Temporalis
- The lateral pterygoid
- The medial pterygoid
What nerve supply’s them with nerve impulses?
The fifth cranial nerve
What does the temporalis do?
*It pulls the mandible backwards and closes
Where is the temporalis located?
- It is situated on the side of the cranium (skull)
- (You can feel it lengthen and shorten with your hand when you open and close our mouth)
Where is the insertion of the temporlis?
*In the coronoid process passing under the zygmoid arch
What does the lateral pterygoid do?
- Both contracting pulls the mandible forward to bite the anterior teeth tip to tip
- One contracting pulls the mandible to opposite sides
Where is the lateral pterygoid located?
- The LATERAL PTERYGOID PLATE at the base of the cranium
Where is the insertion of the lateral pterygoid?
*Head of the mandibular condyle and into the TMJ meniscus
What does the masseter do?
*The masseter closes the mandible
Where is the masseter located?
*The outer surface of the Zygomatic arch
Where is the insertion of the masseter?
*The outer surface of the mandibular ramus and angle
Where is the medial pterygoid located?
*The MEDIAL PTERYGOID PLATE at the base of the cranium
What does the medial pterygoid do?
*The medial pterygoid close the mandible
Where is the insertion of the medial pterygoid found?
*The inner surface of the mandibular ramus and angle
