Muscles of Anterior Thigh Flashcards
Which two muscles does the iliaspsoas consist of?
Psoas major and iliacus
What actions is the iliapsoas involved in?
Flexion and lateral rotation of the leg at the hip joint
What is the origin and insertion of the iliacus?
Originates from iliac fossa of pelvis and inserts into lesser trochanter of the femur
What is the origin and insertion of the psoas major?
Originates from T12-L5, inserts into the lesser trochanter of the femur
What is the innervation of psoas major?
Anterior rami of L1-L3
What is the innervation of the iliacus?
Femoral nerve
What 4 muscles does the quadratus femoris consist of?
Vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, vastus medialis, rectus femoris
Where do all the muscles of the quadratus femoris insert?
They all join above the knee as the quadratus femoris tendon and attach to the patella via the quadriceps femoris tendon (quadratus femoris tendon continues distal to patella as the patella ligament)
How is the patella attached to the tibia?
By the patella ligament/tendon (they’re the same thing)
What is the function of the vastus muscles?
Flexion at hip, extension at knee
Where does the vastus lateralis originate and insert?
Originates from greater trochanter of the femur and lateral lip of the linea aspera, inserts into patella via quadriceps femoris tendon
Where does the vastus intermedius originate and insert?
Originates from anterior and lateral aspects of femoral shaft, inserts into patella via quadriceps femoris tendon
Where does the vastus medialis originate and insert?
Originates from intertrochanteric line and medial lip of the linea aspera, inserts into patella via quadriceps femoris tendon
Where is the greater trochanter?
Lateral to the head of the femur
What is the action of the rectus femoris muscle?
Flexion at hip, extension at knee
Where does the rectus femoris originate and insert?
Originates from anterior inferior iliac spine and acetabulum, inserts into patella via quadriceps femoris tendon
Which joints does the rectus femoris cross?
Crosses hip and knee joints
What are the actions of the Sartorius muscle?
. Flexion, abduction, lateral rotation at the hip joint
. Flexion at knee joint
What is the origin and insertion of the Sartorius muscle?
Originates from the anterior superior iliac spine, attaches to the superior medial surface of the tibia
What is the innervation of the Sartorius?
Femoral nerve
What is the function of the pectineus muscle?
Flexion, adduction, medial rotation at hip
What is the origin and insertion of the pectineus muscle?
Originates from superior ramus of pubis, inserts at pectineal line on posterior surface of femur, just inferior to the lesser trochanter
What is the innervation of the pectineus muscle?
Femoral nerve and obturator nerve
What is the ilium?
The largest part of the hip bone (the two symmetrical wing-like parts)
What does vastus medialis do?
Flexion at hip, extension at knee
What does vastus lateralis do?
Flexion at hip, extension at knee
What does vastus intermedius do?
Flexion at hip, extension at knee
What is the difference between the patellar tendon and patellar ligament?
They are the same thing! It’s a continuation of the quadriceps femoris tendon distal to the patella
Which lumbar vertebrae does psoas major originate from?
T12-L5 (innervated by anterior rami of L1-L3)
Which muscles insert into the lesser trochanter?
Psoas major and iliacus
