Muscles For Locomotion Flashcards
Cardiac muscle
Involuntary muscle found only in the heart, made of interconnected muscle fibres, adapted to generate and conduct electrical impulses for muscle contraction.
Actin
Protein in muscle cells that makes up the thin filaments of myofibrils; functions in muscle contraction
Involuntary muscle
Muscle in which contractions are not voluntary.
Myofibril
Unit of muscle fibres composed of thick myosin protein filaments and thin actin protein filaments
Myosin
Structural protein that makes up thick filaments of myofibrils. Functions in muscle contraction
Sarcomere
Each section of a myofibril in muscle
Skeletal muscle
A type of voluntary muscle that is attached to and moves bones of the skeleton
Sliding filament theory
Theory that actin filaments slide toward each other during muscle contraction while the myosin filaments do not move
Smooth muscle
Type of involuntary muscle found in the walls of internal organs and blood vessels. Most common function is to squeeze, exerting pressure inside the tube or organ it surrounds
Voluntary muscle
Muscle that contracts under conscious control
