Bones: The Body's Support Flashcards
Axial skeleton
One of two main parts of the human skeleton. Includes skull and the supporting bones, such as the vertebral column (spine), ribs, and sternum.
Appendicular skeleton
One of the two main parts of the human skeleton. Includes bones of arms, legs, shoulders, and hip bones.
Bursa
Fluid-filled sac located between bones that absorb shock. Keeps bones from rubbing against each other.
Compact bone
Layer of protective hard bone tissue surrounding every bone. Composed of repeating units of osteon systems.
Joint
Point where two or more bones meet; can be fixed or facilitate movement of bones in relation to one another.
Ligament
Tough band of connective tissue that attached one bone to another; joints are often held together and enclosed by ligaments.
Osteoblasts
Potential bone forming cells that secret collagen in which minerals in the bloodstream can be deposited.
Osteocytes
Newly formed bone cells
Red marrow
Marrow found in the humerus, femur, sternum, ribs, vertebrae, and pelvis that produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and cell fragments involved in blood clotting
Spongy bone
Soft bone containing many holes and spaces surrounded by a layer of more dense compact bone
Tendon
Thick bands of connective tissue that attach muscles to bones
Yellow marrow
Marrow composed of stored fats found in many bones
Ball-and-socket joints
Allow movement in all directions. Ex. Hips and shoulders
Pivot joints
Allow bones to twist around each other. Ex. By elbow allowing to twist our lower arm around
Hinge joints
Allow back and forth movement. Ex. Elbows, knees, fingers
