Muscles first semester. Flashcards
Where does the trapezius attach?
EOP to SP of T12 Superior Nuchal line Ligamentum nuchae Lateral 1/3 of clavicle Acromion process
Nerve supply to Trapezius?
Motor supply via cranial nerve XI
Sensory supply from the ventral rami(branch) of C3 and C4 via the cervical plexus.
Function of trapezius?
- the middle fibers retract the scapula
- the upper fibers elevate the pectoral girdle.
- Bilateral contraction of the upper trapezius results in extension of the neck.
- The lower fibers pull down the medial part of the scapula and depress the scapula. ‘
- Upper and lower produce lateral (external) rotation of the scapula.
- Stabilizes the scapula to allow free movement of the upper limb.
Latissimus dorsi is inverted by?
the Thoracodorsal nerve C6, C7 and C8.
Where does Latissimus dorsi attach?
Twist and attach to floor of bicipital groove Inferior angle of scapula T7 SP to S5 tubercles Lower 3 or 4 ribs Supraspinus and interspinus ligaments Iliac crest
how does the latissimus dorsi move our arm?
Strong extensor, adductor and medial rotator of the humerus at the shulder joint.
If your arms are fixed, how does the lattisimus dorsi move your body?
it acts to retract the pectoral gridle.
Also functions in active expiration (e.g. coughing, sneezing.)
Latissimus dorsi is active in climbing, chinups, rowing, swiming and using crutches.
Where does Levator scapulae attach?
TVP of upper 3-4 cervical vertebrae,
medial border of the scapula (between the superior angle and the base of the spine of the scapula).
Which nerves innervate the levator scapula.
Levator scapula is innervated by the dorsal scapular nerve (C5) and ventral rami of C3 and C4.
Where does Rhomboid minor attach?
C7 and T1 spinus processes + supraspinus ligament
laterally to the root of the spine of scapula.
Where does Rhomboid major attach?
T2 SP to T5SP (and supraspinus ligament inbetween)
Medial border of the scapula.
Both Rhomboid Minor and Major are innervated by?
Both Rhomboid Minor and Major are innervated by the dorsal scapular nerve (mainly C5 spinal nerve, also sometimes C4)
Seratus posterior superior insertion?
inferior ligamentum nuchae
c7-t3 SP
Attatches to lateral angle of 2nd to 5th ribs.
Seratus posterior inferior insertion?
T11-L2 SP
attaches to angle of the 9th to 12th rib
Serratus posterior superior nerve inervation?
Ventral rami of T2 - T5 spinal nerve
Serratus posterior superior function?
Assist inspiration by elevating 2nd - 5th rib.
Seratus posterior inferior nerve inervation?
Ventral rami of T9 - T12
Seratus posterior inferior function?
lower rib 9-12, may assist with forced expiration.
Muscle of the first layer Vertebral columm

Splenius capitis + Splenius cervicis
Splenius capitis insertion?
inferior half of ligamentum nuchae and sp of C7-T3(4) attach to mastoid process + lateral third of the superior nuchal line.
Splenius capitis nerve inervation?
Lateral branches of the dorsal rami of C3, C4 and C5
Splenius capitis function?
Extension + rotation.
Splenius cervicis insertion?
SP T3-T6 attach to TVP C1-C4
Splenius Cervicis nerve inervation?
Lateral branches of the dorsal rami of the C5-C7
Splenius Cervicis function?
Lateral flexion and slight flexion. Bilateral=neck extension.
iliocostalis lumborum insertion?
Inferior border of lower 6 ribs
Iliocostalis thoracis insertion?
Medial to iliocostalis lumborum, and attach to the angle of upper 6 ribs and C7 TVP
Iliocostalis Cervics insertion?
Arise medial to iliocostalis thoracis and attach superior to C7-C4 transeverse processes

Iliocostalis Lumborum
Iliocostalis Thoracis
Iliocostalis cervics
Intermediate colum consist of?
Longissimus thoracis
Longissimus cervicis
Longissimus Capitis
Longissimus Thoracis attachment?
Arise from lumbar transverse and accessory processes and thorocolumbar facia and attach to thoracic TVP and 3rd to 12th rib
Longissimus cervics attachment
T1 to T6 tvp to C2-C6 posterior tubercle of TVP
Longissimus capitis attachment
T1-T5 TVP (With longissimus cervics) and C4 - C7 articular process + mastoid process
