Muscles and joints Flashcards
Define: Voluntary Muscles
Voluntary muscles are skeletal muscles that attach to bones and can be consciously activated to control movement.
Define: Involuntary Muscles
are muscles in the human body whose contraction is controlled by the autonomic nervous system.
Define: Smooth Muscles
Smooth muscle is a type of muscle that contracts without any voluntary control
Define: Skeletal Muscles
a muscle which is connected to the skeleton to form part of the mechanical system which moves the limbs and other parts of the body.
Define: Cardiac Muscles
makes up the thick middle layer of the heart.
Define: joints
two parts of the skeleton are fitted together.
Define: Epidermis
the surface epithelium of the skin, overlying the dermis.
Define: Dermis
the thick layer of living tissue below the epidermis which forms the true skin, containing blood capillaries, nerve endings, sweat glands, hair follicles, and other structures.
Define: Hypodermis
Your hypodermis is the bottom layer of skin in your body. It has many functions, including insulating your body, protecting your body from harm, storing energy and connecting your skin to your muscles and bones.
Define: Movable joints
The six types of freely movable joint include ball and socket, saddle, hinge, condyloid, pivot and gliding.
Define: Immovable joints
the two or more bones are in close contact, but no movement can occur
Define: Tendons
a flexible but inelastic cord of strong fibrous collagen tissue attaching a muscle to a bone.
