Muscles Flashcards
Do muscles pull or push
always pull
How does a skeletal muscle create movement
it goes over a joint and contracts to move one bone while keeping the other one stable
what two types of twitch are in muscle fibres and what are they good for
fast twitch for power/sprint low oxygen
slow twitch for endurance - more oxygen
4 types of muscle movement
concentric
eccentric
isometric
iskeinetic
Describe concentric contraction
All lifting
muscle shortens
eg flexing biceps
describe eccentric contraction
opposite to concentric
called extension
eg using the triceps to straighten arm after biceps curl
great way to build strength on downward/straightening phase
isometric contraction
tension but no movement
e.g. plank
isokinetic contraction
movement with consistent resistance e.g swim stroke
increase of muscle size is called
hypertrophy
decrease in muscle size is called
atrophy
