Muscle Vocab 2 Flashcards
Fixators
Hold a bone still or stabilize the origin of a prime mover
Acetylcholine
The specific neurotransmitter that stimulates skeletal muscle
Origin
The point at which a muscle is attached to an immovable or less movable bone
Synergists
Help prime movers by producing the same movements orby reducing undesirable movements
Action potential
An unstoppable electrical current that travels over the surface of the sarcolemma, resulting in contraction of a muscle cell
Muscle twitches
Single, brief, jerky contractions of muscle activity
Adduction
The movement of a limb toward the body midline
Muscle fatigue
When we exercise our muscles strenuously and a muscle is unable to contract
Antagonists
Muscles that oppose or reverse a movement
Oxygen debt
During prolonged muscle activity, body cannot take in oxygen fast enough to keep muscle cells supplied with oxygen
Extension
A movement that increases the angle of a joint and increases the distance between 2 bones
Flexion
A movement that decreases the angle of a joint and brings 2 bone together
Neurotransmitter
A chemical that stimulates a muscle cell
Circumduction
A combination of movements, commonly seen in ball and socket joints
Prime mover
The muscle that has the major responsibility for causing a particular movement
