Prone
Lying face up
Used during surgeries of the anterior anatomy; delivery of a baby
Standing or sitting upright
Used during most of a physical examination
Supine
Lying down on stomach
Used during surgeries of posterior anatomy (back, hemorrhoids, neck)
Lateral recumbent
Lying on one side
Used during surgeries that focus in a structure that is lateral (kidney, lungs) or during some procedures (spinal tap, spinal block, epidural)
Anesthetize
To create a loss of feeling in one area, with or without consciousness
Local anesthetic
Loss of feeling in one area but NO loss of consciousness
General anesthetic
Loss of feeling in one area AND loss of consciousness
