muscle types + muscle actions and names Flashcards
cardiac muscle
muscle of the heart
controlled by ANS (autonomic nervous system)
involuntary control
striated
single nucleus
smooth muscle
lines hollow organs
controlled by ANS
involuntary movement
no striations
single nucleus
skeletal muscle
located in muscles that attaches to bones
voluntary control
striated
many nuclei
prime mover (agonist)
primary muscle involved in movement
antagonist
muscle with action opposite to prime mover
fixators (stabilizers)
increase tension to stabilize joints
synergists
assist agonists but are not the primary movers - guiding muscles
reciprocal inhibition
muscle work in pairs, one contracts while the opposite relaxes
how are muscles named?
- Action / Function – ex. Flexor, adductor, etc.
- Location – ex. Femoris, tibialis, medialis, lateralis.
- Shape – ex. Trapezius
- Number of Heads/Divisions – ex. Biceps, triceps
- Direction of Fibres – ex. Transverses
- Point of Attachment – ex. sternocleidomastoid
origin
least movable part
- place where muscle attaches closest to midline or more proximal
insertion
most moveable part
- place where muscle attaches further from midline or more distal
function
resulting action or motion that occurs when the muscle is activated
- based on where muscle originates and inserts
