Muscle Tissues Flashcards
Function of muscle tissues
. produce movement
. storage and movement of substances in the body, lymphatic drainage and blood
. stabilise body positions and joints
. thermogenesis
Properties of muscle tissue 4
Contractility- ability to shorten and
thicken in response to stimuli; allows
force production and movement
Excitability- respond to a stimulus by producing electrical signals; muscle activation, contraction and function
Extensibility- To stretch without getting damaged; muscles can lengthen when relaxed
Elasticity- Can return to normal shape after contracting or lengthening; can maintain that specific shape despite its malleability
Muscle fiber orientation
Parallel- fibers are equal in length, entire muscle can shorten equally and in same direction, max range of motion e.g. rectus abdominis
Triangular- broad at base, converge to a single point, fan shape allows diverse actions e.g. trapezius
Circular- surround an opening to form a sphincter, contract and close passages or relax and open them e.g. orbicularis Orbis
Fusiform- thick central belly with tapered ends e.g. bicep brachii
