Bone shapes with examples

A

LONG : humerus, femur, phalanges
SMALL : Carpals and Tarsals e.g. allows fine and gliding movement in hand and foot
FLAT : sternum, ilium, ribs e.g. thin layer of spongy bone surrounded by compact bone
IRREGULAR : Vertebrae and fascial bones
SESAMOID : Patella e.g. incased in tendon; helps improve leverage &
strength of muscles that cross it

Protection Organs – brain, heart,
lungs, kidneys.
Movement- bones act as mechanical levers
Support- framework and shape
Mineral storage- calcium
Blood cell production- Haematopoiesis; occurs in the bone marrow
